The larger-than-life comic was spotted learning lines while on a train to the Who set in Cardiff.

When quizzed by a fan, excited James - Smithy in the award-winning sitcom - blurted out the secret.

Matt Smith,

New Doctor ... Matt Smith

A show insider said: "We normally keep our guest stars under wraps but you can't hide a bloke like James.

"And now he's not coming to Wales for Gavin And Stacey any more, it's pretty obvious why he is here."

Pals say James, 31 - who filmed much of Gavin And Stacey in Welsh resort Barry Island - is a huge Doctor Who fan.

And he jumped at the chance of appearing in the new BBC1 series, which starts in Easter.

He will join new Doctor Matt Smith, 26, who has taken over from David Tennant as the 11th Time Lord.

The insider said: "James loves coming to Wales.

"And it gives him a chance to meet up with Ruth Jones, who co-wrote Gavin and Stacey with him and starred as Nessa."

James follows in the footsteps of fellow comics Peter Kay, Catherine Tate and Lee Evans, who have all had parts on the show.

Gavin And Stacey co-star Russell Tovey - Smithy's pal Budgie in the sitcom - has also appeared in the sci-fi hit as Alonso Frame.

But the BBC refuses to reveal whether James will be a friend or foe of the Doctor.

The insider said: "We're just delighted to have James on board.

"He is a great actor and he'll be a perfect fit for the new Doctor Who."
